Captain’s log, day five of our first real retirement voyage. Although we aren’t totally retired. And except that I am not the captain.

Today in response to the sunshine I hauled summerish clothes out of their bag that had been stored under the aft settee. Despite being sealed up, they emerged with a distinctly musty smell which was not overcome by the patchouli perfume my daughter makes for me.

When I went into the store at the marina I sensed people taking a step away from me but maybe that was my imagination. It may also have been that this was before I took my first shower in four days. We generally have limited water when we are away from a dock but today of course we were able to use lots.

A good airing out and the clothes will be fine. I’m pretty sure. The Captain and I always have a special odour that our family calls a “boatlike smell” which seems to be a combination of mildew and diesel oil. Today’s scent just carried more of the mildew in the equation.

After our crazy day yesterday, we opted to stay put at the marina for an extra night to give the Captain’s hand a chance to rest. However, we had to move the boat as the dock we were tied to had a returning vessel that expected its regular spot back, which is fair.
