Captain’s Log, Day Four
May 22, 2022
Captain’s log, day four of our first real retirement voyage. Although we aren’t totally retired. And except that I am not the captain.
So remember I said something yesterday about disasters happening in threes? Well the number three came today. True story.
We got up at a leisurely pace and had our coffee and took the dogs to the shore. All good.
Then the Captain began to haul up the anchor which operates on hydraulics. Simply speaking while winching it in things did not go well. His hand ended up wrapped into the drum of chain. I guess you could also call it the drum of pain. The anchor finally came aboard and he nonchalantly walked around into the wheelhouse and began driving the boat out of the cove. He calmly said: “could you bring me some paper towels” as the blood dripped out of his hand.
I scooted down below to the galley to get some and hastily popped back up where he proceeded to clutch them while steering the boat with the other hand.
As he headed away from our anchorage he stated: “I’m just going to head for the nearest dock so I can go to a hospital to get this stitched up”. Just like that. I think I nodded my head and said OK, but I’m not sure.
