Captain’s log, day twenty of our first real retirement voyage. Although we aren’t totally retired. And except that I am not the captain. And I am posting this the day after due to sketchy cell service.

That photo there is of a crab shell in the forest. And no, it did not get there by marching up a hill and into the woods. It would have been dropped there by one of the many critters who live off the bounty of these shores. We see seagulls, eagles, ravens, and crows carrying off sea creatures. Sometimes they drop them on the rocks at the shore to open them up, swooping back down to pick up the goods. And obviously, occasionally take them into the woods to eat.

We stayed today at the same place, Hathayim Marine Park. Some of our family guests headed off fishing in their boat; we stayed behind with our two granddaughters who wanted to swim, row and muck about.

The Captain took the youngest one to shore where they explored under rocks and he taught her to skip rocks. At least she came back from the beach saying she had learned how; was quite proud of herself.

The fisher people returned empty-handed but still having had a good day. The grandson finished off the platter of brownies and the lemonade. He is a teenager at the hollow leg age; eating slices of bread and peanut butter between regular meals. He’s taller than we are; his outgrown clothes get handed down to his grandfather. Handy actually.

They departed in the late afternoon and left us with memories of a delightful couple of days together.

And tomorrow we shall forge onwards.
