I called my son yesterday. I wasn't able to talk to him, one of his phone numbers was no longer in use but the other allowed me to leave a message.

I understand the fear feeling you have. I know it in my bones. It's familiar.

We all have to do what we are able to do, what we feel called and need to do for our kids and ourselves. And it will be different for each of us. In the support group I've attended for family members of addicts I heard from parents who were at every end of the spectrum. Some who had blocked their children from their lives completely and some who were engaged in trying to help and were driving the streets looking for them every week. Some cared for their grandchildren, some rented apartments for the adult child. Some had called the police when their child arrived at their door.

Addiction is misery for the addict and those who love them.
