My husband and I adopted twelve children from the foster care system. In most cases, in their birth families before entering the foster care system alcohol was a significant factor in the family breakdown. Sadly some of these kids' development was compromised early on by prenatal exposure to large amounts of alcohol. One of their mothers said she drank a dozen beers a day throughout most of her pregnancy. Coupled with poor nutrition and other factors the outcome for the child was devastating as you can imagine.
