There Can Be More Than One Truth

And we can wish neither were true at all

I drove a quiet country lane yesterday. And then I stopped at a bridge that crossed a winding river. The tree's colours are ripening into fall and the salmon are swimming upstream. I could see them jumping out of the water a little way down; some who had already found their way were lying dead on the rocks at the side. The story of a salmon's journey is a beautiful one but that is for another day.

The calmness and beauty of the scene before me belied what was simmering in my heart and mind.

I am broken by the news of Israel and Gaza. Hamas started a war that cannot end well for anyone. The deaths that have taken place in a few short days and now the retaliation by Israel threatening to cut off food, water and electricity to the Palestinians living in one of the most densely populated places in the world can only end in so very much devastation.

Before this war began there were already over a million children living in Gaza who needed humanitarian aid. There is no imagining what will happen in the coming days and weeks to those children and the many others who live there.

I see the news stories. Hamas has committed brutal and inhumane carnage on Israeli people in the attacks over the past few days. Those committing these…
