We live in a time when it seems there is little money for anything that we might perceive as an extra. But the cost of those who are homeless, addicted, or mentally ill not being given what they need ends up costing us all more in the long run. People spending time in jail or hospital or as part of the justice system is a horrendously expensive way to respond to these problems. Putting the money into services will not stop it all, but it could make a difference for many.
