What Are You Willing to Die For?

I am pretty sure of some things I would be willing to die for. Most of those revolve around my children and grandchildren.

There are many stories of bravery in the news. There always are. Some people are willing to die for someone they know. Many for strangers.

In the news over the past few months, there have been numerous stories of heroism in Ukraine. Folks who physically put their bodies in front of others to save them from bullets or shelling. Volunteers who go there from other countries to fight for Ukraine with no real connection except perhaps admiration for the courage of the people there already in the battle. The Ukrainian men and women on the front lines trying to stop the Russians from getting closer to their homes and communities.

In my world, free from war, some people give up a kidney or a piece of their liver for a stranger. Or undergo a painful bone marrow transplant for someone with cancer. To me, these are all marks of someone selfless and brave.

In recent times the climate crisis has pushed folks to take risks that include long jail terms. They take actions including civil disobedience; they chance arrest, losing their job and sometimes their family. Some spend months or even years blockading industry from logging…
