Work: “Activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result.” That’s from the Lexico, UK Dictionary.

Where I live, most people work as a means to an end. That effort put out to achieve a result is to make enough money to do what they need to. Like pay rent or a mortgage and buy food. If they are lucky, they end up with extra and can do things that they enjoy in their leisure time.

Working to live. That’s the story really. Except for a few. Who find jobs that are enriching, enjoyable and that they love to get up and go to. Some even find themselves in what might be considered a “calling”. Usually a profession that they have felt a compelling need to be part of, sometimes since a child. Often folks described being “called” to be a church minister. A doctor or teacher are helping jobs that might fit into that category.

More recently I think perhaps people are more likely in the teaching profession because they get so many holidays in a year! In any case, I have rarely heard someone say they felt “called” to be a plumber. Although the work that they do is at least as valuable as many other more prestigious professions.

Where I live we are fortunate. There are labour standards that prescribe how many hours in a day and…
